Ahe Dive Resort
Ahe Island, Harlem Islands, Cenderawasih Bay · Indonesia
Closed July 2013. You cannot book this.
It is on this site because I dived with it before it went, and because pages describing it in the present tense are still online. If you arrived here from one of those, this is the correction.
A small resort on a coral island in Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua, run as the shore base for diving the bay where whale sharks gather under the fishermen’s platforms.
What it was like
Six nights on Ahe in August 2012, at the far end of a three-month trip — eleven months before the notice went up. Getting there meant Manado to Nabire and then a boat; it was the most remote place I have dived.
What happened
The operators posted a closure notice on 15 July 2013: the property had been taken over by the government to serve as a base for MIGAS Pertamina, the state oil company. An earlier post had hoped to reopen elsewhere. Nothing followed it.

Where to dive it now
Cenderawasih Bay is still dived, but from liveaboards and operators out of Nabire rather than a resort on Ahe. I have not dived with any of them, so I am not going to name one as a recommendation — treat this page as a correction, not a referral.
No affiliate links, no commission, no paid placement. This list is short because it only holds operators I have actually dived with — including the ones that are gone.
